Where's Democrat-controlled Congress?
In what some are calling a "symbolic" move, President Bush today lifted a White House ban on offshore drilling, throwing the issue to the Democrat-controlled Congress to take similar action.
Surprisingly, the Democrats continue to resist taking actions that will help to eventually relieve the prices of fuel.
President Bush said to reporters: "Today, I've taken every step within my power to allow offshore exploration. This means the only thing standing between the American people and these vast oil resources is action from the U.S. Congress."
Senator Barack Obama shows inexperience in comments
Talking through his spokesman Bill Burton today, in response to President Bush lifting the ban, Barack Obama said naively that "It would merely prolong the failed energy policies we have seen from Washington for 30 years."
Obama needs to do his homework better. The truth is the so-called alternative energy sources are decades away from doing any good or making any impact, and oil is the best short-term solution available. There are billions of proven reserves ready and available off American coasts, in Alaska or in shale.
The problem is year after year drilling is put off, creating the illusion that it's a failed energy policy. The truth is we wouldn't have this problem in its current effect on gas prices if driling would have begun years ago when it should have. Now we're all paying the price.
To attempt to call this a "failed policy" by Obama is close to lying. Either that, or he's that misinformed and naive, as I mentioned, hoping that Americans don't do their homework in checking it out.
Already the corn-based ethanol subsidy in the U.S. has been a disaster, and needs to be shut down immediately. It not only isn't providing the relief hoped for, the usual unintended consequences related to government interference in the free markets has caused food prices worldwide to surge as well.
We not only need to drill offshore, we need to drill everywhere across the U.S. to tackle the problem head on. That could have an impact on prices sooner than some think, as the futures market would be the first to eventually respond.
Republican presidential hopeful John McCain has called for the decision to be handed over to the states.
The Democrat-controlled Congress now has an opportunity to lift their ban, as the existing ban expires on September 30. They need to have the guts to exercise some leadership for once.
You know the pressure will mount as gas prices continue to rise. To go against the grain on this one is nothing but cruelty to the American people.
