Montreal laughingstock, as union forbids property owners to sweep sidewalks
Canada seems to be completely going to the dumps (pun intended), as now shopkeepars and apartment owners in Montreal can't sweep the front of their properties to make it look better, as a renegade and worthless union has said only the blue-collars have the right to sweep the areas.
What brought this about, is businesses and apartment complexes in downtown Montreal were starting to look like pig pens. So a law was instituted requiring business and apartment owners to clean up their properties. Enter the goons!
The bizarre conclusion of a "union" arbitrator, was that the bylaw to clean the properties violates a collective agreement with workers. Andre Rousseau evidently concluded "the city has no business enlisting 'volunteers' to do the work."
Union thugs in Montreal have been using campaigns of intimidation against private contractors for years, as they can't compete with the better services businesses offer.
In a typical socialist response and reaction, Rousseam added that the bylaw "patently aims to give citizens responsibilities similar to those that are usually given to blue-collar employees."
One courageous property owner (read that: property owner), Peter Sergakis, said about the union workers, "The blue-collar workers wouldn't bend to pick up a cigarette butt. They're spoiled. I don't have much faith that they're going to clean the sidewalk. I think we're going to go back to the dirt." I think he's right.
According to Montreal's director of professional relations, Jean-Yves Hinse, the city will appeal the ruling to Quebec Superior Court.
This just underscores the reason unions need to voluntarily disband and cease operatons. Look at the U.S. What industries are most hit by the economic downturn? The majority, like airlines, the auto industry and Hollywood are all heavily unionized and completely clueless as to the new economic realities.
The only thing that cures that is healthy competition, something the unions can't and won't compete with.
