As I wrote on another blog, I've never written about my Dad anywhere before this weekend, and I thought I'd take the chance to offer up something he taught me through his life that will be of help to others in life and business.
Even though he never got past a 9th grade education, and worked as a carpenter all his life, his insight and attitude toward those who make assertions and threw around their BS has helped me tremendously through the years I've owned and/or managed a number of businesses.
What was particularly funny about him, was that he could cut through all the nonsense in a humorous way, yet completely dismantle the silliness being proferred by the person talking.
More than once in my professional and personal life I was saved from potentially devastating decisions because I watched him throughout the years as he listened and than quickly tore apart arguments or "opportunities" being offered him or us as a family.
Of course at the time we thought we were being robbed or cheated out of something, yet when looking back it's amazing to see how his responses positively affected our lives in a number of ways.
I don't care how educated someone was, how much money they made, or the marketing line they used, you didn't get past his nose, and if he smelled something wrong, it didn't take him long to find and eradicate it.
Looking back after he's left this earth, it was amazing to think of this man who wouldn't have been thought of as much in the world, humbling the powerful as they attempted to sway him to their ideas or ways. It's one of the most valuable lessons I've ever learned.
Happy Father's Day.
