At home, he was affectionate and understanding. He gave love by being interested, involved, and always there for his family and friends.
While there are obvious strengths and benefits to what was mentioned above about Walt Disney personally, I want to apply it to business, because I believe how Disney lived his life at home, was what motivated and inspired him in the workplace.
When you watch the many Disney films from the early years, you see in them much of that affection and understanding displayed by Walt at home.
As his daughter Diane Miller said one time:
"Daddy never missed a father's function no matter how I discounted it. I'd say,'Oh, Daddy, you don't need to come. It's just some stupid thing.' But he'd always be there, on time."
The point to me is who he was at home, was, in general, who he was at work. He was true to who he was and what he represented, and remained that way until the day he died. In other words, Walt Disney was genuine, and it showed in his work.
In today's world people are looking for the genuine, and who people are privately is what they want to see publically through the company.
This is why even when people repeat the ignorant mantra of what you do privately is your own business, the reality is it does matter to people, and they expect us to be true to it: personally and as a company. They want to know that who you say you are is what you really are: again - personally and professionally. Don't believe you can live a type of secret life and portray yourself as something else publically. People don't like to be lied to and fooled, which what that is.
Walt Disney never had that problem, as his films and Television productions always represented who and what he was, and also what he said the Walt Disney Co. (NYSE:DIS) was. If the Disney name at that time was attached to it, you knew you could count on it being true to their business culture and vision. We need to embrace that same practice and reality.
Screw this type of marketing that attempts to make a company and what it represents different from what it really is. Once people discover that's what's being done, it's extremely hard to get your credibility back. The best thing is to never do it in the first place. Walt Disney never did.
