"To cure the British disease with socialism was like trying to cure leukaemia with leeches."
Forced redistribution of wealth, which is what socialism is, is attempting to rear its ugly head again, as its proponents attempt over and over again, through different avenenues, to bring the evil beast back into play.
Margaret Thatcher fought against this heroically in Britain, and helped the country get back on its competitive feet again economically. It wasn't because of socialism, but because of the bringing back the power of free markets and capitalism.
In America it's again being peddled, especially by Democrats, who under the guise of concern for people not able to afford health care, are pushing the agenda again. This is in spite of the proven fact that it is devastating to those who are sick in countries which have already socialized medicine.
Canada is the closest, obvious example, where pregnant women, to the tune of 1 out of every 7, come to America to deliver their babies because they can't get in to see a doctor in a timely manner. Those who are sick with devastating diseases go throught the same thing, as artificially produced markets by government interference have created far more demand than truely exists, and keeps people from getting timely care. People don't like to be reminded of these types of stories, and many in the mainstream media overall ignore it.
Margaret Thatcher says it right, in that trying to deal with the problems of society through socialism is the same as trying to cure leukaemia with leaches. The dead, stale carcass of socialism is still being treated as viable, even as communist countries embrace capitalism and entrepreneurship, and are beginning to change their economies and lives forever.
To see America being attempted to be brought backward, based on faulty reasoning and demagoguery, is too bad. In many areas the Democratic Party is attempting to buy votes through the plundering of citizens in the name of health care, and other initiatives.
On the outside it sounds good, but the truth is it provides far lower quality health care in the countries that have adopted socialist models. The other truth is that anybody in America can get health care now. That's the dirty little secret that isn't communicated by the media.
Socialism is a completely failed way of doing business, and it's far past time we need to take the attitude and see through the eyes of Margaret Thatcher the devastation it creates, and the far poorer services that come about as a result.
