"There can be no liberty unless there is economic liberty."
This comment by Margaret Thatcher is more important than simply enjoying a quote or using it as a slogan. More than ever capitalism is under attack, and capitalism and entrepreneurship is the underpinning of the economic liberty Thatcher was talking about.
When economic liberty is attacked, which it has been for a long time, it's a direct attack on liberty in general, as all life is part of the selling and buying of products or services; and how free a market is, and how much government interference is involved with the market, will determine the degree of liberty a people will experience.
The larger and more intrusive government is, the more they steal from the productive through confiscatory taxes, and redistribute it to the largely unproductive, who feel their unproductivity deserves to be rewarded by plundering the successful.
This is a huge reason to not want the fame that can come along with wealth and success; not only for individuals, but for businesses as well. It's far better to run under the public radar in this age of envy and entitlement, than it is to be well known and under scrutiny at all times.
Margaret Thatcher understood this when she started dismantling the socialism that had embedded itself in British culture.
One of the major problems which cause this to happen is the desire, and sometimes lust, for people to feel secure. While there is far less security when the government interferes, the false perception of security makes people feel safer, when in fact they're less secure. History has proven this time and time again when increasing government interference destroys liberty and free markets.
Thatcher exposed this as the British Prime Minister, and did a good job of getting Britain back on the track of liberty; although there is still a lot of work left to do.
One of the key measures of overall liberty is how economics in a country is treated. If you want to truly be free, then we should oppose all forays by any government to make itself too powerful and involved with the everyday lives of people. That means we need to oppose policies that raise taxes, tort lawyers, and respond to those who hate entrepreneurship and business.
If we lose the battle for economic freedom, we've lost the overall battle for freedom.
