For the second time in a year, General Electric (NYSE:GE) has filed a lawsuit against SonoSite (NASDAQ:SONO) for patent infringement. Both times the lawsuit has centered around ultrasound equipment.
The newest lawsuit is again over hand-held ultrasound equipment, which SonoSite says concerning the lawsuit is "baseless and without merit." SonoSite specializes in hand-held ultrasound products.
"We strongly believe that there is no legal basis for this lawsuit and we will proceed firmly ahead to defend our legal rights," said Kevin Goodwin, president and CEO, in a statement.
A year ago in May 2007, General Electric also filed a lawsuit alleging SonoSite Inc. infringed on other ultrasound-related patents as well. SonoSite eventually countersued GE, saying that GE in companies connected to it infringed on their patents.
The latest lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin, the same court the first suit was filed in.
With a market cap of only about $500 million, SonoSite would probably be devastated if they were to lose these lawsuits.
