Flight attendants for Delta Air Lines Inc. (NYSE:DAL) voted to reject the national labor union, the Association of Flight Attendants, or AFA. They prefer to negotiate directly with company leadership rather than paying an in-between to do it. Delta felt the same way, saying in a press release they were glad they "continue a direct relationship with its flight attendants."
This could all have to be done again if the proposed merger with Northwest Airlines (NYSE:NWA) passes regulatory hurdles. Federal law allows a new vote when a company merges with another unionized work force.
The AFA is already whining about losing the vote, complaining that Delta interfered with the process. At this time those assertions have been rejected by the National Mediation Board, which said they "did not find extraordinary circumstances" connected to the vote.
The board added that it would look at any other complaints once the vote had taken place.
It's always good to see the unions rejected by workers, as this outdated and no-longer-needed practice only hinders the freedom of people to work, and for the most part creates artifical problems between workers and management.
