The media circus surrounding the dragging of oil executives before Congress is just that: a media circus.
To me it's not about oil prices or oil company profits, it's about politicians who are being negatively perceived by the public trying to get the attention off themselves and directed toward someone else.
As liberal Massachusetts Rep. Ed Markey said, he threatens the oil companies with taking away tax breaks and giving them toward what he calls "planet-friendly energy alternatives like wind and solar."
Could you imagine those "ugly forests of windmills strewn around the countryside," which never produce enough electricity?
This is pretty disingenuous to me. The public asks for answers of its politicians, and all they get is passing the buck, making bogeyman of business again.
I have an idea, why not have members of Congress and governors grilled by the public on the state and federal average tax on gasoline, which as of the first quarter of 2008 has reached 47 cents a gallon. Wouldn't the public like an immediate 47 cents a gallon drop in prices on their gasoline costs?
