"You don't work for a dollar — you work to create and have fun."
This should be the attitude of every manager and business leader in the world; if it was, the changes in the workplace and innovation would be far more extraordinary than I think we could imagine.
The point in saying this is, if you work to create and have fun, the money will follow. Focusing primarily on the dollar will almost always cause you to miss the mark, as it is the focus on what creates the dollar - your customers - that will bring you what you want.
As the always relevant saying goes, "if you give people what they want, they'll give you what you want." If you're creating and having fun, you will definitely be giving people what they want.
Walt Disney knew this when he saw the need for a clean amusement park, which eventually became Disneyland. At that time parks around the U.S. were known to be filthy and unclean. The opportunity seen by Disney to create something people would feel good about going to and enjoy hanging around, was one of his greatest successes.
He had fun creating Disneyland because he knew how pleased and encouraged parents would be when taking their children there. We all know how the dollars followed the "fun."
There isn't one business or division I have managed that didn't change and become far more productive and profitable when the element of creativity and fun were added to the way the business culture was. It's vastly underrated as to its power to attract money to a business.
Walt Disney knew the power in it, and to this day we see the fruits of that belief and way of doing business with the Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS).
