The amazing come back win by the Kansas Jayhawks over the Memphis Tigers was a tremendous lesson in successful management and coaching.
With a little over two minutes in the game, Kansas was down by 60 to 51. With the powerhouse they were playing, there was very little hope or chance they would pull the game out, but they did.
They entered into their strategy of fouling and making the other team beat them under the pressure of having to make free throws. Memphis wasn't able to respond, and the Jayhawks tied the game, and eventually dominated the overtime period, winning the game 75 to 68.
Every bit of what happened was based on preparation by the coaching staff, and executing their game plan under pressure, while not giving up.
I've had and heard other coaches say and do the same thing, as they didn't even care much if the opposing coach knew his strategy, as he knew if the team could execute it properly, they had as good a chance of winning as anybody.
Having a plan, preparing our team for the plan, and then executing that plan is probably the major key to business success, as well as success at anything else in life.
This is one of the reasons sports is so important from a management perspective, as it allows us to see immediate feedback and execution as the game progesses in real time, and learn from coaches and teams how to prepare our people to know the plan, execute the plan, and perform under pressure.
It doesn't get any better than that for those leaders able to get their people to buy in.
