Pizza Hut is under fire for suspending one of their drivers for defending himself after delivering a Pizza when a man put a gun to his head and demanded he turn over money to him.
Des Moines, Iowa was the setting of the incident, where James William Spiers III shot at the suspect attempting to rob him several times, hitting him a minimum of three times.
Kenneth Jimmerson was later arrested when he called to get medical attention from his wounds. Another suspect was arrested in the incident, Melanie Stout, who allegedly made the call for the pizza order. She is charged with conspiracy while Jimmerson is charged with first-degree robbery.
When asked about Spiers suspension, Vonnie Walbert, vice president of human resources at Pizza Hut in Dallas, incredibly said
that employees arent allowed to carry guns to protect themselves "because we believe that that is the safest for everybody." Let Walbert tell that to Spiers, who may be alive only because he had personal protection.
According to Spiers, there's been a lot of inaccuracies in the media coverage, but said, "I can't correct them right now. It's not wise for me to talk about the case with the ongoing investigation and all."
It's amazing that Pizza Hut suspends a driver for defending his life. They need to rethink their policies.
Spiers has a legal handgun permit to carry.
