n upscale Orange County hotel was the location of an attempt to drug former Olympic gold medal-winning ice dancer Pasha Grishuk, as she participated in a business meeting.
On April 12 Grishuk began to feel sick at the St. Regis Monarch Beach hotel when she spotted a partially dissolved pill at the bottom of her drink. An investigation led to the discovery of another pill in another drink Grishuk had ordered in the lounge. Both were found positive for GHB.
Sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino said about the incident: "How somebody was able to do that, I honestly don't know, but it appears that somebody, for whatever reason, attempted to drug her."
Grishuk started to feel sick and to experience numbness in her body when she saw the partially dissolved pill in her drink.
The drug, named gamma hydroxy butyrate, or GHB, can also cause people to pass out, struggle with breathing, get real tired, suffer a seizure, como and in extreme cases even death.
Tips on Preventing someone giving you date rape drug:
In the business meeting scenario, there are a couple things a person can do to prevent being a victim of GHB.
1. Only buy and receive your drinks directly from the bartender or server. If someone else buys your drink, make sure you watch the bartender pour it for you; insist on it.
2. Once you receive your drink, don't let it out of your hand. Once it's at your table or wherever you may put it, you don't know what could be put in it, as in the case of Grishuk, who was obviously distracted while the pills were slipped into her drink. It was not only done once in her case but twice.
These two things will go a long way toward protecting you from being not only potentially raped, but also from other health problems that the drug could cause you.
Of course the ultimate protection, especially when you're with people you don't know, is to not drink at all. Barring that, the two ways above are about as safe as you can get in these situations.
