It never ceases to amaze me how the cycle on and on concerning those with good intentions ending up being so destructive. Just think of the term "unintended consequences" and you'll get the right idea.
That leads to the growing reality that pushing ethanol as a bio-fuel alternative is coming at an extraordinary cost to people and the environment.
Ethanol has already been discovered to be a diasaster, and a growing number of those studying it agree it could become one of the major blunders of all time by the U.S. government and politicians who jumped on the bandwagon to garner some votes.
As one writer says, "An unholy alliance of environmentalists, agribusiness, biofuel corporations and politicians" has resulted in the promotion of an alternative fuel that is doing far more damage than can be imagined.
Another writer says proponents have already left the facts and are treating ethanol as a religion, rather than looking at the horrible consequences already emerging from the boondoggle.
Problems emerging from the ethanol craze:
Increased food prices
Increased feed prices
Increased meat prices
Employee Layoffs
Plant Closings
Distribution Centers Closing
Huge pressure on water supply
Hurts environment
Hurts third world
Deforestation across the world
Destruction of wetlands
Destruction of grasslands
Displacement of small farmers and indigienous peoples
Loss of habitats that store carbon
Razing of rain forests
Conclusion of Michael Grunwald in the latest issue of Time magazine:
" ...saving forests is probably an impossibility so long as vast expanses of cropland are used to grow modest amounts of fuel. The biofuels boom, in short, is one that could haunt the planet for generations — and it's only getting started."
It's past time to get off this nutty bandwagon.
