A lot of people pay money to find out if they are owed money somewhere. Most people don't know that this can for the most part be checked out for free.
There's one official Web site that is a national database called Missingmoney.com, which can be accessed for free. All you have to do is fill in the usual form with your name, state, ZIP etc, and the Web site will go through 40 states in just a few seconds to find out if you have money owed you somewhere.
An amazing one in eight Americans are owed money, so it's definitely worth checking out. The average amount owed is from $800 to $1,000.
Another way you can find out if you're owed money from tax refunds you haven't collected is to IRS.gov and click on the "Where's my Refund?" area and input the needed information.
The IRS says it has close to $100 million in refund checks on hand that haven't been claimed in 2006, averaging $953 each.
