Pooling their resources, they borrowed an additional $500, and set up shop in their uncle's garage.
Recreating the garage experience
The story of starting a business in a garage isn't anything new of course, and it's been told numerous times by many people about thousands of businesses. I bring it up here because it's not only a practical necessity that makes this valuable to those starting out, but it's increasingly becoming something larger businesses are emulating and recreating within their own companies.
What I mean by this, is when some companies are looking at various creative possibilities and new initiatives, they deliberately recreate similar circumstances and environments to be the equivalent of starting something up in a garage.
Some of the things done, are not allocating an abundance of resources to the project, so those that are working on it don't rely on money as the sole answer to problems, but rather the generation on innovative, creative ideas.
Another strategy used, is companies will move people away from the main headquarters of the company so they get out of that atmosphere, in order to make it feel like a small startup company struggling to find ways to make things work. That way they can brainstorm and interact in ways that can make things happen quickly.
We need to look at these types of things as we go ahead with our companies. The idea of recreating - as close as we can - a garage-like experience for our company, is a great way to get the creative juices flowing, and find new ways of doing things.
This doesn't just have to be done with coming up with brand new businesses for a company, it can be applied to any specific problem the company may be facing.
Depending on the size of the problem or issues at hand, we can sequester our people for a time and allow them to tackle it outside the mainstream of the company, so they can look at it from an objective and unimpeded way.
Either way, looking for ways to put our people into situations that come close to being a garage-like experience is a valuable tool we need to keep in our business strategy arsenal. That's another way of saying we must keep our businesses entrepreneurial. This is one tool we can use to keep that happening.
The Walt Disney (NYSE: DIS) company was built to what it is today from this foundation, as a number of other companies have. The challenge is keeping that a part of our company while continuing to grow.
