“What Jobs showed the labels was that people were willing to pay for music, even though they could get it other places for free. It changed the environment from where the industry was hostile to where people saw the opportunity.”
Time and again, Steve Jobs saw what was ahead, and took the initiative and steps needed to get there. Jobs has said a number of times that he doesn't really care for focus groups and things like that, because people really don't know what they want, and the results can be completely skewed; as they are many times. There are exceptions to that, but with many products and services, that's the reality.
As it relates to Jobs and the music industry, he again saw what the market was saying, even if it was becoming a market of free music, and tapped into it to show the music industry people would pay for it if you gave them a good reason to, and an easy way to do it.
Jobs of course did both, and with the introduction of Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPod and iTunes, the rest, as they say, is history.
The point is Jobs is able to get out in front of trends and put products there that he tells people they want and need, and they gladly follow.
In times of turmoil and upheaval, that's when the greatest opportunities present themselves. We are in that time now, and those helping lead people where they want them to go, will be the big winners.
To me that's what being a real leader is, is getting people to follow you. Jobs has that ability, and puts out products and services people buy because of that leadership, not because they told him to.
People innately will follow those that lead them, so we can't be shy about taking that lead. Jobs isn't, and look where that's gotten him and Apple.
