The controversial rein of Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has now gone on to the legal part of the mess, as he was officially charged with lying while under oath about his affair with Christine Beatty and firing a police officer who had been investigating reports that a wild party had taken place at the mayor's mansion.
While Kilpatrick has denied all this in the past, his 14,000 plus text messages to Christine Beatty over an approximate four-month period (two in 2003 and 2 in 2004) contradict his assertions.
Amazingly, Kilpatrick bought into the idea that one can use public equipment and funds to engage in private affairs. He believed all this was a "private matter." He, as well as others, are finding out this isn't the case.
Other controversial connections to his activity have been a $24,995 leasing of a luxury Luxury SUV Red Lincoln Navigator for his family in 2005, and an $8,600 amount that may have been used from the Civic Fund for a family vacation at the La Costa Resort and Spa in Southern California.
The affair he had with Beatty and the firing on the police officer for investigating the wild party at the mansion are confirmed in some of the 14,000 plus text messages between Kilpatrick and Beatty.
It's amazing to me that those in leadership positions across the world, not only don't think they need to be held to higher standards, but in many cases think they can get away with almost anything if they are in it.
We need people with integrity and focus who won't abuse the public confidence; whether it's spiritual, business or government leadership. We must do better than this.
The illusion that public life is somehow separated from our private lives is just that: an illusion. We need to live both with the highest level of integrity and honesty.
Major charges against Kilpatrick and Beatty by prosecutor Kym Worthy are for perjury and obstruction of justice.
