Dith Pran, who saw and experienced first hand the devastation caused by the brutal Khmer Rouge government in Cambodia, died Sunday at the age of 65 of pancreatic cancer. His experience was what the movie "The Killing Fields" was based upon.
Pran was also named a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, and also ran the Dith Pran Holocaust Awareness Project. He had also worked as a photographer at the New York Times (NYSE: NYT).
The term "killing fields" came from Pran, which he used to describe the enormous number of dead bodies and skeletal remains he came upon on his journey which eventually led to his freedom.
He said he regreted that Pol Pot was never brought to justice for his crimes.
Dith is survived by a sister Samproeuth Dith Nop; sons Titony, Titonath and Titonel; daughter Hemkarey Dith Tan.
