It's always interesting and exciting to hear a Stradivarius violin is going to be up for sale, and this time it's no different, as Christie's is about to offer one called "The Penny," which is dated from about 1700.
It is called "The Penny" based on the name of its late owner, Barbara Penny, who was an accomplished pianits and violinist, and the first woman to be accepted into the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra's strings section.
The violin, made by Antonio Stradivari, is expected to go at auction for between $1 million to $1.5 million. The highest price paid for a Stradivarius violin at auction is $3.54 million, which "The Hammer" received in 2006.
The Penny" is described as different in that it has a more sweet and feminine in sound than "The Hammer."
Although not as famous to the general population, another violin, made by Givoanni Guadagnini called "The Ex-Wollgandt," will be at the auction, and is expected to bring somewhere between $300,000 to $400,000.
Of the approximate 1,100 instruments built by Stradivari during his lifetime, about 650 are known to have survived.
The Christie's auction will take place on April 4.
