Still think public and private lives are separate?
Eliot Spitzer is learning the hard way that the myth that what you do in your private life is separated from your public life: wrong!
The overwhelming response of his political colleagues and constituents in New York were for him to step down, which of course he announced he is doing today; effective Monday.
Spitzer said concerning his decision: "Over the course of my public life I have insisted people take responsibility for their conduct. I can and will ask no less of myself. For this reason I am resigning as governor."
In an investigation of Spitzer and suspicious financial activity, the FBI found he had been engaging in sexual activity with an upscale prostitution ring called Emporers Club VIP. They say he took part in the services a minimum of eight times over the last eight months.
According to some legal experts unrelated to the case, Spitzer could face charges of money laundering called "structuring," along with charges in relationship to the Mann Act, which makes if a federal crime to bring someone across state lines for the purpose of engaging in prostitution.
Lawyers for Spitzer are reportedly working behind the scenes to work out a deal where Spitzer isn't prosecuted. If that were to happen, I don't think it would go well with him with the American people.
New York Lt. Governor David Paterson, who is an African-American, and also legally blind, will take over as governor on Monday.
As I said at the top, the myth and illusion that what we do in private and public are serparate, is shown to be false and ignorant, as the American people have shown in their reaction to Spitzer's indiscretions. Don't believe you can separate who you are into compartments and stand for opposite things through your actions. It doesn't work.
