"The tremendous popularity of her program soon gave Winfrey ... opportunities."
One thing many of us still have a difficult time with, especially as it relates to success, is how to manage it when it comes.
When Oprah first got her show going, there was suddenly no lack of opportunities to do work within and without her specific industry niche.
For example, it wasn't too long after her show became fairly popular that she was offered a role in "The Color Purple," which was being coproduced by Quincy Jones and Stephen Spielberg, while being directed by Spielberg.
What's interesting and challenging about opportunities, is they have just as much downside as upside, and many don't understand that. So what businesses do, is take on almost everything that comes their way, and then collapse under the inability to provide and service what they say they can.
There is also the very real possibility a business can be taken in directions that can eventually pull it apart, as it leaves the foundation of why they exist. Opportunity can be the great seductress which leads us to places we have no idea what to do with.
Oprah did this once with her Oxygen network. While it all sounded good, and seemed within the parameters of what her company did, it ended up being a disaster for her because she it didn't represent who she was and what she wanted. Eventually she sold it because of that.
In our rush to embrace opportunities, we truly need to be discerning and filter everything through our reason for being a business.
One thing we can count on, when we do become good at what we do, there'll be more things offered for us to get involved in than we could possibly imagine. Those can be far more crucial times in our businesses than the times we struggle through slower periods.
