"People think that at the top there isn't much room. They tend to think of it as an Everest. My message is that there is tons of room at the top."
In the area of business, this is also very true. Even with all the ways businesses are trying to find to develop great leaders, there's never quite enough of them to go around. While there always will have to be someone in a position, that doesn't mean it's really filled, it just means there's a warm body there.
For anyone who wants to pursue excellence in business leadership, and are willing to pay the price to reach it, there's really not much that can stop you from reaching your goals. The need in business for really great leaders will never be filled. That means there's always an opportunity for those willing to pay the price.
That's what Margaret Thatcher was in general referring to: there's always room at the top for great leaders. As a matter of fact, her statement insinuates theres a lot of room; not a crowded place you have to elbow your way through to reach.
This isn't to say we don't have to work our way up to these levels, or that there won't be real competition along the way, it means that if you're willing to take the journey, there's a place for you there.
Competition on the way to the top is in reality very good for us. There's really no way of measuring our progress unless there are others we're racing against. Rather than be intimidated, we should welcome it. This will give us a real idea on where we're truly at, and where we need to improve. It will also reveal to us the level of expertise and excellence we need to achieve and attain our personal management goals.
If anybody ever tells you there's no room at the top, don't believe them. They could be just saying this to you in order to keep more competition from entering into the field. For them, one less competitor is one less challenge they have to be concerned about.
Having said all this and understanding the opportunities, then we need to turn around and intensely focus on the responsibilities at hand. It is the highly successful performance and discharge of our everyday responsibilities that will bring us to the place we want to go within a company.
