In an interview with Boston Magazine, Liz Claman talks about her rise through the ranks of overall reporting, and her eventual migration to business news, and ultimately to the Fox Business Network (NYSE:NWS-A).
In her early days of local reporting, Liz mentions it was much easier to cover the various events happening around town, than it is to cover business news. For example, she talks of the bodies waiting to be dug out of rivers, etc., which is very easy to report on and cover.
Contrast that with business reporting, according to Claman, and it's much more difficult to stay on top of your game.
The obvious question about her stint at CNBC (NYSE:GE) came up, and Claman didn't take the bait on bad-mouthing her former employer, rather she was gracious and said she owed a lot to them for bringing her to the point of being an attractive employee for Rupert Murdoch or Roger Ailes to hire.
While being nice about it, she was basically saying CNBC was educational and basically the minor leagues, preparing her for the Fox Business Network major leagues: "I owe CNBC a lot. They got me to the point where someone like Rupert Murdoch or Roger Ailes would find me interesting and smart enough to be a part of their new operation that was going to take a different route."
Here's some of what Claman said on the differences between the two business networks and her personal reasons for going there:
* The way FOX Business does it is exciting
* We’re looking at the great American business story
* We're looking for stories of "gutsy resolve"
* FOX Business started this network when I needed a change in my life
* At FOX Business, they don’t yell at you for doing things wrong—they support you for doing things right
* I would love it if he (Rupert Murdoch) came in and yelled at me* We are finding our voice
* We are figuring out what works best
* I’m a hard news babe. I feel that we’re absolutely giving people that
* I’ve always felt there’s no such thing as a wrong career move
* Ninety-nine percent of the world is terrified of the unknown. I’m in the one percent that says bring it on
* I’ve always tried to take the road less traveled
* Here’s the news we got from Roger about the ratings—don’t listen to the ratings
* It’ll come if you do the best you can every single day
* People from CNBC call her every day about migrating to Fox
* Business news affects everybody
* She gets email all the time saying her fans have found her on Fox from CNBC
* You always learn something wherever you go. Always
Liz Claman loves business news, and you can see it when she talks and reports on it, and the quality of her reporting. I agree with her assessment that "People who say business news is boring have never watched business news."
