Andy Grove: Only the Paranoid Survive - 50

"It's not personal. It's about an invisible third party: the truth. The truth is so precious and so hard to coax into view--surrounded by its bodyguard of politics and half-truths--that there is simply no time for fuzzy thinking."

This is one of the best ways I've heard someone describe the difficulty in drawing the truth out of whatever means we're attempting to use: whether data, information or people.

Truth is in reality always hidden, and ask Grove so amptly describes, must be coaxed into view.

So how does one allow oneself to be able to draw the truth out in a world full of smoke and mirrors, and half-truths?

It's in Grove's first three words above: "It's not personal." When we allow ourselves to be inserted into a situation in a personal way, any type of data or information brought to us will be skewed because we no longer are objectively observing, but are subjectively involved.

This is one of the reasons why so many people looking at the same data or hearing the same story, can see just as many different images and conclusions as there are people listening. Or as Grove would say, "fuzzy thinking."

One of the chief characteristics of Andy Grove and his tremendous business and management results was his ability and willingness to step outside any personal desires or inclinations he had, and look at the picture and situation as if he had no vested interest in the outcome.

Truth can't be discovered when it becomes personally influenced, whether by ourselves or others. It's rarely obvious, and must be wooed and courted out of the source it's embedded in. Andy Grove was one of the great masters in history who knew how to flirt with the truth and get her to go with him on a date. The reason why was because it wasn't personal to him.
