Once he returned from France, he wanted to pursue a career in commercial art, which soon lead to his experiments in animation. He began producing short animated films for local businesses, in Kansas City.
What I want to mention in reference to the steps Walt Disney took here, is his willingness to take on jobs that would eventually lead him to his goal.
He didn't try to overreach and become an overnight sensation, rather he simply took on some small work locally to practice and develop his craft. He started experimenting in animation locally, rather than attempt to do something bigger than he was ready to handle, or was at the level to perform.
It's hard to picture now, but for Disney and others like him at the time, there was no road map laid out before him concerning animation, everything at this stage was experimentation.
What Disney did have was a vision of what he wanted to do and where he believed the public was also ready to go. Of course he guessed right, but as he had said over the years, the thing to remember was it "all started with a mouse."
That was his way of saying it was progressive; it didn't happen all at once. Whether we're beginning a new project within a business, or starting a new business itself, we have to understand we must do the work at the beginning to take the faults out of the product or service so when it's offered to the public, it's operating as expected and promised. That's why you hear so much about "beta" these days. That's simply inviting people to try our products, so when they interact with them we'll find out what needs to be changed.
Don't be afraid of small beginnings, the vast majority of people have to start there. It's where we're at at the end of the journey that counts. Disney understood that, even with all his grand visions and dreams.
