"His views and visions, came from the fond memory of yesteryear, and persistence for the future."
One of the things that made Walt Disney extraordinary, was his ability to appreciate the past, acknowledge the present, and build toward the future. Not very many people are able to do that.
This is one of the reasons there are a tremendous amount of disruptions and discontinuities in the world today. People suddenly abandoned what was and attempted to create this whole new way of living that the majority didn't want. That relates to a lot of social issues, so I'm not going to stay on that at this time.
For Walt Disney, part of his genius was to understand the past, and at the same time become a bridge to the future.
While Walt made also sorts of films and TV shows celebrating wholesomeness, he also saw clearly some of the problems the future would inevitably bring, and so entered into that realm as well ... developing ideas like Epcot - among others.
What's important is he didn't forsake the tremendous value of the past, while also understanding there was a real future that was ahead of us. What that did was bring him to his present, where he offered his vision and ideas on what we needed to do and where we needed to go.
So while he entertained us and made life a lot more fun in the present, he also built out his plans he had to what he saw as real problems we all faced ahead.
We need a lot more leaders that are bridges in the world, who won't make false disconnetions with the past, while still acknowledging there will be changes ahead. Walt Disney personified that type of leadership.
As far as it applies to business, those able to operate like this will have an extraordinary competitive advantage over those that simply bull their way ahead, with no regard to the responses or consequences.
The truth is the past, present and future exist together with people, and those able to operate with a bridge mentality will successfully help people move ahead, while building trust and brand which will allow them to market to them as lifetime customers.
