A Business Leaders' Greatest Skill?
Those that are great business leaders, understand the difference between being efficient and being effective. The two are drastically different, and if one is done right, everything else falls in place, if it's done wrong, the whole business can fall apart.
Let's quickly define the two, so we can get to the main point. First, Efficiency is doing things better with what is already being done. In other words, it's doing things right and better, no matter what the project being worked on.
In contrast, effectiveness is doing the right things. The great problem for business leadership is in making the right decisions on what the right things should be. That's really the whole game. If that isn't done right, the rest won't make a difference.
Business leaders need to understand they are ultimately responsible to make this decision, thus they're ultimately responsible to gather data from wherever they can - including employees.
We can have the greatest workforce in the world and fail miserably if we don't work on the right things. The best quality in the world won't matter if it's not the right product and service.
Those willing and able to be truly effective leaders, i.e., know what the right thing to work on is, will be the winners. There's nothing else to consider in this area. It's as simple as that.
All the training and skilled workforce in the world, or any other management skills, won't matter if this isn't done right. It's only from that foundation that the rest works.
A little hint if you're looking at being a successful business leader: look at being effective as your first priority. What you decide to get into will for the most part decide how you lead. Choose the right field and you'll look like a genius, choose the wrong one and it won't matter how good you are, you won't be able to bring it to greatness.
