The $2,500 Tata Nano Unveiled in India Today

The public got its first look today at the Tata Nano, a car built by Tata Motors of India, and has its lowest price tag at $2,500. That price of course has gotten it a lot of interest and buzz, and people wondering what it's going to be able to do and what it'll look like.

At the lowest price point of $2,500, we find the first thing that will have to be sacrificed in order to get that price: there is no air conditioning! With the higher priced Tatas, there will be air conditioning.

The engine in the car is 33hp, and another question arises on how fast the car will move if it runs the air conditioning, and what its mileage will be. According to Tata, the car can run up to 54 mpg. The assumption is that is without the A/C running. It's highest speed will be 65 miles per hour.

What drove Ratan Tata to make the car was the need to provide families, who in some cases ran around on a scooter with several family members on them, an affordable means of transportation, and one which was much safer.

Tata unveiled the car today at the Delhi auto show, with a pop star style media event. It'll be available sometime in the second half of 2008.
