
Jobs is a master one-line marketer!
One thing very few people are equal to Steve Jobs in is the ability to market something with a simple one-line message. He could speak something that would be taken as hyperbole if anyone else said it, but when he says it, it's taken like it's straight from the Bible.
What is also impressive, is even though he can give long talks, it's those tiny marketing messages that resonate with his listeners.
Here are a few that he's said throughout the years:
"Do you want to spend the rest of your life selling sugared water or do you want a chance to change the world?"
- The line he used to lure John Sculley as Apple's CEO
"We made the buttons on the screen look so good you'll want to lick them."
- Jobs, on Mac OS X's Aqua user interface"There are sneakers that cost more than an iPod."
- On the iPod's $300 price tag"It will go down in history as a turning point for the music industry. This is landmark stuff. I can't overestimate it!"
- On the iTunes Music Store
Every one of these statement creates a vivid picture in your mind. Along with that, he makes it sound believable.
While people with these types of skills or qualities are almost impossible to copy or imitate, we can look at the things he says and learn from them. We may not be able to do it with the impact that Steve Jobs does, but we can improve upon it.
For example, Warren Buffett has the ability to do something similar to Jobs, yet he does it in a completely different style and manner. Yet people linger around him to lap up his zingers as well. You could even say he's the anti-Jobs as far as pithy sayings go. Buffett will usually poke fun at himself and make understatements.
What's the point of all of this? It's a powerful way to brand you and your company. You don't have to be a zany nut like Herb Kelleher or outrageous guru like Steve Jobs. Within who we are, these are a powerful way to get the attention of people and make a huge impression and influence them. There's a lot of power within that ability that can be tapped for success. Think of ways you may be able to use it yourself.
