Jean Preston had lived in a very modest home, and lived extremely frugally. She traveled by bus, and ate frozen meals.
But within her home were extraordinary works of art which she had either bought, or in the case of most of them, inherited from her dad.
Amazingly, when experts came to examine her paintings after her death in 2006, they found them strewn around her house in no particular order or display.
For example, they found the two missing from Fra Angelico, which were part of an eight-part altar decoration, which were behind the bedroom door, and only discovered as they were leaving to go. Fra Angelico was considered a master Italian Renaissance painter.
She also had rare books by Chaucer that she had lying underneath clothes.
When the final auction hammer came down, the collection ended up bringing in $7.95 million.
