"I've learned that you can't have everything and do everything at the same time."
One reason this is so important as it relates to management and business, is it keeps us from reaching prematurely for something. If we reach for something we aren't able to handle, it will devastate a company and its leadership.
What's the underlying discovery Oprah is actually talking about? Life and business is a process, not something that happens together all at the same time.
This is something many people misunderstand when they read successful business and leadership stories. The illusion created in their minds is that is happened overnight, and even at times the words "overnight success" can even be included in telling the story.
The truth is there really isn't such a thing. Even if someone gets it right the first time around, like their business being wildly successful, it's taken a lifetime of experiences and circumstances to get them there, even if they're young. Whatever they're succeeding at has been the result of something else before in the vast majority of cases.
That doesn't mean they may even understand it, yet it's still there. Nothing comes forth out of a vacuum, there's always history and process connected to it, even if it may seem unrelated.
In anything we do as a leader in business, the thing Oprah learned above will always be an important part of our learning. It can keep our discouragement levels not as deep, and also balance our times of triumph, recognizing it took a long series of steps and actions to get there.
You can't get everything at the same time, but you can through a process over a period of time. Work from that premise and you'll manage the inevitable swings that come your way from momentary setbacks and the euphoria of wild success. Both are temporal.
