"I know for sure that what we dwell on is who we become."
This is nothing new to us who are always looking for ways to improve and become excellent, but it is a good reminder to consider at all times.
One major reason we need to keep this before us is the tendency as business leaders to migrate away from what's really important in business, and get bogged down in side issues. It's not that we are to ignore problems - that would be a mistake. Rather, we must deal with them while keeping our eye on the vision of the company.
As Oprah mentions concerning personal vision: "what we dwell on is who we become." That transfers to companies and business leadership also. If we focus on the endless problems, we can become scattered within and quickly lose focus as we attempt to put out the endless fires always starting around us.
Again, we're not talking about pretending problems don't exist, just that we look at them as something to take care of, not a reason for existing as a business.
In other words: stay focused on the vision. We must have the discipline to be able to take care of problems while remaining on course. That's the dangerous waters difficulties can bring to us, as we can unwittingly take our focus off the prize while we transfer it to the endless problems always emerging.
How do we handle this problem? Stay focused on the vision of the company while taking care of the practical issues rising out of doing business. They will always exist within a company at the same time, so they will always be before us at the same time.
If we get lost in the distractions of practical issues, we become a rudderless ship going in whatever direction the rapids take us.
But if we keep the vision of our company always before us, it not only helps define how to take care of problems, but keeps on sailing on course, while at the same time taking care of business.
The bottom line is we need to learn how to embrace both at the same time.
