The leader of the Mormon's, Gordon B. Hinckley, called president and prophet by its followers, has died at the age of 97 Sunday in Salt Lake City at his apartment. The announcement was made on the group's Web site.
Hinckley had been in a key leadership role in Mormonism for the last 46 years. He spent almost 13 of those in the president position.
In reality, because of the poor health of presidents he served under, he in practicality had been leading the group for many years before he became president (since 1981).
In conjunction with the media age we live in, Hinckley was a significant presence for Mormon's, as he had an affinity and personality to be able to do interviews and deflect and disarm tough questions or comments with his humor. In other words, he was a good public relations man.
On the web site, it was said there will be no successor chosen until after his funeral.
Hinckley is survived by his children, Kathleen Barnes Walker, Virginia Pearce, Jane Dudley, Richard Hinckley and Clark Hinckley; 25 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren. His wife passed away in 2004.
