Looking to do Business in Brazil? Know its Fashion Rules

Brazil is one of the top four emerging markets companies are targeting for growth, with Russia, India and China being the others.

Doing business in Brazil has its own, unique cultural rules one must follow, especially as it relates to how you dress.

A humorous but educational situation on how a visitor to Brazil was dressed can be read here.

As it relates to doing business in Brazil, it's considered as important - if not more so - how you dress than what you may say or do.

Here are several of the suggestions given to men or women that may be traveling to Brazil to do business by a recent visitor:

* Casual is out.

Unless you're Steve Jobs or Bill Gates, you won't get away with casual attire when doing business in Brazil. Those working in offices will wear casual attire, but if you go that route, you won't be taken seriously. Simply don't do it.

* Overall Appearance is Important

This might be a tough one for some people, as in Brazil, it's not only what you wear, but how you look overall. For example, how your hands look (manicured or not) is important there, and will be taken notice of. That goes for both men and women. Think of the word "meticulous" when thinking of your outward appearance, and apply it to everything. That should keep you safe.

* Wear Tailored Suits

Another important part of the Brazil equation is not only what you wear, but how it fits on you. That means you've got to make sure that suit is tailored. The point in this is Brazilians are totally fashion conscious, and they measure you accordingly. Don't underestimate it, even if you can't relate.

* Special Times Out

Now if you're going out at night for some unique situation, the rules of the game change, and it becomes time to dress down some. Nothing too dramatic here. For the ladies, the women in Brazil go with a more natural look, at times adding some red lipstick to bring it to a higher level.

For everyone, nothing which overly stands out is the order of the day. Overdoing it in these situations is definitely a fashion faux pas.

* The Ultimate No-no

Whatever you do, stay away from the colors green and yellow. Why? It's the color of the national flag, and no matter what it looks like or how it fits, people will think of you as silly and completely ridiculous.

So there you have it. The interesting way the Brazilians look upon people. Make sure you take them into consideration if you're planning on doing business there.
