"Celebrate everything."
We've talked before about the idea of celebrating everything with Herb Kelleher, this time we'll look at the reasons why he had this as part of the way he operated Southwest Airlines (LUV).
While celebration is fun and encouraging, and can take the edge off, it also results in a number of benefits to a company.
For example, with Kelleher, he saw it as a great encourager of creativity. He believed it released the creative juices and added a lot to the company through the stimulation of the workers. He thought of it as taking a mini vacation every time it happens, which many times people do to stir up their thoughts.
Another great benefit he saw was it would help take people beyond routines and the daily routine that all businesses have. By going beyond routine, it again would help people think outside of where they were, to be objective and look at things from a differenct perspective. That in turn would engender unconventional thoughts.
Possibly the most important, it "creates memories and strong bonds. Most people I think understand this. Something happens when you get together and celebrate something as a team, or a corporate entity. It brings you together far more than motivational speeches. There's a sense of lasting friendships and relationships that bring immeasurable value to a company.
We could go on and on with this. The benefits are extraordinary. It's simply a matter of being a company that celebrates. The rest organically emerges from that.
