Boeing Co. (BA) has officially signed an agreement with Gulf Air, the national airline carrier for Bahrain, for an order of up to 24 Dreamliner aircraft worth $6 billion.
The deal is structured so there is a definite commitment for 16 planes, worth $3.4 billion, and options for another eight. Delivery is scheduled to begin by 2016.
There's also the possibility Boeing could get more business, as well as Airbus SAS, with Bahrain also looking to add another 21 planes for short flights.
Boeing has had several good years, as they've broken annual orders for their planes for the third straight year, mostly from the growing demand for planes in the Middle East and Asia.
According to Boeing, the Dreamliner consumes 20 percent less fuel than other mid-size planes, while being able to fly at speeds equal to their larger counterparts, as well as offering airlines the ability to ship more cargo, so creating more revenue for them.
These are several of the reasons the Dreamliner has become popular so quickly. So far it has over 800 orders.
