In response to a devastating shortage of food for hungry Americans, Wal-Mart (WMT) stepped up to the plate and donated 3 million meals to food bank network Second Harvest.
The contribution by Wal-Mart, who was the first corporation in American to respond to the plea of Second Harvest to fill the need of the severe shortage this year, will take care of approximately 25 percent of the food needs at this time, which is stated as 12 million meals short of meeting the need.
"The hunger crisis our nation's food banks are currently facing is something that all of us at Wal-Mart care about and are taking very seriously," said Margaret McKenna, president of the Wal-Mart Foundation. "We are pleased to be in a position to respond to the call to action from America's Second Harvest, and hope that this donation will help them to feed those who are hungry this holiday season."
Wal-Mart will send trucks filled with food to feed hungry Americans in all 50 states.
"We are extremely grateful to Wal-Mart for coming through in such a big way for our food banks to help more hungry Americans as we face one of the worst shortages of food bank supplies in our history," said Vicki Escarra, president of America's Second Harvest. "We hope that other corporations, organizations and individuals are able to dig a little deeper this year so that no one goes hungry, especially over the holidays."
Over the last twelve months, Wal-Mart has donated over $270 million to help local communities across the United States.
Second Harvest is the largest domestic charitable hunger-relief organization in the United States. They serve over 25 million people yearly to meet their food needs. They also serve Puerto Rico, along with the rest of the 50 states and District of Columbia.
