Steve Jobs: The Captain of Cool - 33

Steve Jobs on the value of death - Part 5

"Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life."

Continuing on with our theme on the value of death, something most people don't like to dwell on, hopefully we'll all begin to see that there is a real value in facing and accepting it, and as a result being set free from fear of it.

Jobs gets into another benefit he gets out of it by the simple adomonition above of not living someone else's life, because we only have one to live.

The other very important little insight said by Jobs above, is that our time is limited. This isn't a call to panic and worry, but rather a call to properly weigh our time on this earth, and live it how we want to, not through the life of someone else.

If you want to know a secret, it's that those that are able to understand the concept of time, as it relates to our mortality, who reach success quicker than others. The understanding of time, along with a commitment to not waste it, does more probably than anything else to bring someone success at a fast pace.

For lack of a better word or phrase, I guess you'd call it an inner time clock. Most the time people start to discover it at around forty years of age of so. They start to understand that for the most part, half their lives are over. From that realization, they start to think of life in a different way than they have in the past. It's there that one starts to look at and discover what's really important to them.

In business I think it can be transferred in the same way. Those companies always trying to copy what every other company does, are in death pangs; they don't know what it is that's truly imporatant and vital to the company - what they really are and want to accomplish.

Companies that lead, whether they identify it as such or not, understand the time clock of the company, know what's really important, and pursue it vigorously. They're the market leaders out there.

The faster we healthily identify our inner time clock, and admit we're going to die someday, the sooner we begin to take steps that are connected to the life we really want to live: personally and professionally.

What the differentiator is, is the ability to know when you're working on the right things, and when you're wasting your time.

Admitting to our personal and business mortality is a huge step toward making the most of our time, and becoming successful in whatever it is we choose to do.
