Steve Jobs on the value of death - Part 3
"Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose."
What can a person do when they know they have absolutely nothing to lose? I think the answer is just about anything. It's when we try to balance out all eventualities that we can paralyze ourselves into inaction.
When it comes down to it, Jobs says, "You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart."
This doesn't mean just some blind stab in the dark at something because you're just going to let it all hang out. It's knowing that because we're going to die some day, there is nothing to lose in going after where our heart is leading us. This doesn't mean we do it blindly or don't prepare or learn the particular niche we're going to serve. It means that we don't allow ourselves from being held back in pursuing it.
We come into the world with nothing, and we're going to leave it with nothing. What do we have to lose? That's the reality we all face.
Thinking we have something to lose is the trap that will lead us to lose everything. Something to lose means we're measuring ourselves as if we're going to leave this world with something. We aren't! When we leave it will all stay here.
So contemplating death can be liberating and freeing, in that we are free from the bonds of trapping ourselves in our own thinking; enslaving ourselves to loss. Forget your legacy. Nobody will care down the road anyway. Go where your heart leads you, and you will leave a legacy, not for yourself, but for others.
We're all going to die, so what do we have to lose? Absolutely nothing. Follow your heart. You were created for something. Follow it with everything you've got.
