"Don't settle"
In our search for that which satisfies us as business leaders or managers, Steve Jobs had one key piece of advice: don't settle!
What he was referring to isn't what we hear about when settling down into something which can result in a company or business leader losing their edge, rather what he was talking about was not settling for something less than what you desire.
Now he isn't saying you shouldn't work or learn until you do, he's saying while you're working, learning and doing, don't settle for that which is less than satisfying to you.
Jobs said another time concerning the same thing, "As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it." I think that's true.
For the sake of safety and comfort, many people pass up on the best for them because it's easier to settle than it is to continue searching.
We're not talking about a restless dissatisfaction that makes you perform poorly; that could end up in career suicide. Rather it means that we perform to our best in our current situation, but never take our eye off of where we want to go or what we want to do as it relates to our career.
Even if we're not exactly sure what it is that moves us professionally, we can be sure, like finding the one we love, that when we do find it, we simply know it.
If that sense of finding it isn't in us, we can still continue to do our best, but always looking for that which we're in the world for. There'll be that sense that somehow we've arrived. Our heart will let us know.
