"Living in the moment brings you a sense of reverence for all of life's blessings."
Oprah's insight into the value of living in the moment for one's personal life is important, but in reference to business, it's just as important.
When a business leader is always looking toward the future, there's the real temptation to take our eyes off the present. If we follow through and practically operate that way, it's a sure way to business failure. It can't be done successfully.
Does that mean that we are to take our eyes off the future and what we are shooting for? Not at all. What it means is we have to work today, focused on the present task, while looking at the market we serve and gathering up the best data to base our future focus and strategy upon.
The two must exist in tension side by side in our companies if we want to remain strong in the present, while having a long-term chance at solid growth. This is one of those cases where it's never either/or, but both together.
Living in the moment, as Oprah says, gives us the opportunity to totally focus on excellence today, which is the only thing that assures us a future. At the same time, we must look at where things within our industry are trending, to make sure what we're working on today is the right thing, which will truly be what gives us a future.
The healthy tension between the present and the future is something that will always be with someone as they move ahead to success. We must learn to live with that tension if we want to survive.
