
A mall in Omaha, Nebraska was the scene of a tragedy today, as a lone gunman opened fire on customers, killing eight and wounding five others before taking his own life. The gunman stood on a balcony in the mall when he opened fire on the shoppers.
An AP report cited by Bloomberg said the shooter was found on the third floor in the Von Maur store, while his victims were found on the second and third floors.
The desciption of the gunman was he was a young male dressed in an Army vest while carrying a rifle.
He was identified by a confidential source as Robert A. Hawkins, either age 19 or 20. The law enforcement official added that he left a suicide note saying he wanted to "go out in style."
The Westroads Mall is the largest in Nebraska, at 1.2 million square feet, and is owned by General Growth Properties. It's visited by 14.5 million people yearly.
