Jeanne Assam, who was trained for and working security at New Life Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado, spotted the gunman, 24-year-old Matthew Murray inside the church building, and ducked down to hide. When he got closer to her, she stood up and indentified herself, and then opened fire.
"I saw him coming through the doors and I took cover. And I waited for him to get closer and came out of cover and identified myself and engaged him and took him down," she said.
Murray has now been confirmed to be the shooter who also killed two people killed in the Denver suburb of Arvada, at the Youth With a Mission center.
Before entering the church building, Murray had already shot several people, killing two: sisters Stephanie Works, 18, and Rachael Works, 16. Their dad was also injured in the shooting, which happened for them when they were attempting to get into their van.
Assam was a former police officer in Minneapolis, and was a voluntary security officer at the church when the shooting occurred.
Police said if she hadn't stopped him, casualties could have been much higher.
Assam said she'll never forget the gunshots, "God was with me and I asked him to be with me and he never left my side. I was very focused and it was chaotic. It was so loud. I'll never forget the gunshots. It was just so loud."
Repeatedly throughout the press conference, she gave credit to God for helping her with the difficult situation she faced.
"I just knew what I had to do," said Assam. "It was me, the gunman and God."
It's an extraordinary story of how preparation, calm, faith and doing your job can have such tremendous results.
