Ken Hendricks, who quietly went about building his business empire, died during surgery today, after falling from the roof on his property and incurring massive head injuries. Hendricks was 66.
For Hendricks, his love was taking old, used buildings and revamping them for new uses.
In a statement, ABC Supply, a company Hendricks launched, said, “It is with great sadness that we must share the news that there has been a tragic accident resulting in the death of our founder.”
In 2006, Inc. magazine named Hendricks their Entrepreneur of the Year. He also has been on the Forbes 400 list, where he made his first appearance in 2004 at the No. 352 position. This year he moved up to the No. 91 spot, surpassing notables like Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey and Donald Trump.
Hendricks owned and managed about $480 million in property in the United States, among other projects. His total net worth according to Forbes stood at $3.5 billion.
He's a tremendous success story, as he never finished high school and went to work for the family roofing business.
Ken Hendricks had the folksy way about him that Sam Walton also had; not pretentious in any way, and he never forgot where he came from. His humility stayed with him far past the time he became a wealthy man, to the day of his death.
Hendricks is survived by his wife and seven children.
