Buffett’s ability to make light of a situation was one of the major factors that allowed him to handle even the most stressful of circumstances.
Everyone that's been around for some time in business leadership or management knows that a difficult situation is always a moment away. How one handles and responds to those times will determine our ability to stay in leadership over the long haul.
Warren Buffett is a great example of someone who not only doesn't take himself too seriously, but goes out of his way to poke fun at himself and the mistakes he has made managing Berkshire Hathaway's (BRK-A) portfolio.
When you consider the pressure that is on Buffett to continue one of the greatest stockpicking and business leadership tenures in history, you can only appreciate his need to make light of situations that consistently come along.
The real gift he has is the ability to function at a high level while keeping things light for himself and those around him.
In other words, he doesn't get immature or childish about things to the point of abdicating his role and purpose, but rather he simply knows his capabilities and strengths, and confidently, light heartedly goes about doing his job without being overly concerned about it.
If we take ourselves and the inevitable situations too seriously, we won't last long in this business, or our response to problems will become a self-fulfilling prophecy which comes true.
We need to remember the world won't end with the problems we face, and we can make fun of the problems and circumstances, we're in a healthy place to actually help solve them, rather than be overcome by them.
