"The only thing we know about the future is that it will be different."
The future always brings with it a tension; at least thinking about it does. There are some that are so tense and focused on it, that their living in the present is hindered and work can suffer.
Others totally focused on the present, do the opposite ... they focus so much on the now, that they are clueless as to where things may be going, or the various alternatives before them.
When developing various businesses and products, we obviously must focus on the present concerning them, but we could never had started working on the product in the first place if something we perceived in people wasn't the reason for starting work on the product being made.
We sometimes may not think of it while this is going on around us, but it is a reality at all times. The future will eventually arrive, whether we're prepared for it or not.
As it relates to business, we can never get that feeling of settling down within us. It's a dangerous place to end up in. I'm not talking about resting while we move ahead with things, but relaxing in a way that allows competitors to catch us off guard.
As Drucker said, the future is coming, and the one thing we can be sure of, is it will definitely be different than it is today. Knowing that should keep us in the proper frame of mind in attitude as we focus on what makes us successful today, while looking with the other eye toward tomorrow.
