"Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith. I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did."
When Steve Jobs was fired at Apple (AAPL) he responded like anyone else would, in being depressed and tempted to give up.
Loving what you do is nothing knew, as those that do it, know how much of a motivator that can be.
What Jobs is talking about here though, is loving what you do, and then losing that thing which you love. That's not something we hear talked about a lot. Possibly the greatest reason for people giving up, is to lose something they actually found they loved.
As Jobs spent some time thinking about his life and what he wanted to do next, he started to discover that in spite of what happened to him in a very public manner, he still loved what he did.
The temptation for most people at this time would be to think they made a mistake because of a big setback, and they entered into the wrong field or area to work in.
Jobs described it like this: "I still loved what I did. The turn of events at Apple had not changed that one bit. I had been rejected, but I was still in love. And so I decided to start over."
Here's the secret: If we truly love what we do, outward circumstance will never change that. So even if we're rejected and cast out of what we love to do, there can be no option except to start back over again and get going.
I don't believe Jobs ever believed at the time he would be back at Apple. He didn't pick himself up again thinking that. What he did know is he couldn't do anything else than what he felt such a passion for. He refused to drop and give up on what he believed he was meant to do.
Again, one of the greatest disciplines those who are successful is to not allow outward circumstances to change what they truly believe they're meant to be and do.
