Robert Thomson, who has been the editor of the "Times of London" for five years, is reportedly the choice of Rupert Murdoch to be publisher at the Wall Street Journal ... starting sometime after the new year, according to the Guardian, citing a U.S. media executive.
While there has been no official announcement or comment from News Corp. (NWS-A) or Rupert Murdoch on the circumstance, behind the scenes Murdoch has been quietly spelling out what he's going to do once the company closes on Dow Jones (DJ) sometime in December.
On Thomson's part, he's been completely mum on the rumor, only reminding those enquiering that as of now, Dow Jones isn't a part of News Corp.
The long-term consensus of workers at the Times is that Thomson would leave only if he was offered an executive commercial position somewhere within News Corp. Thomson's history has been especially strong in increasing circulation, specifically working for the Financial Times branch in the U.S., where he built the circulation from 32,000 to over 123,000.
The unnamed source says that the move is about 90 percent for sure that Thomson will publish the Journal next year.
"It will probably happen in the first three months next year, but it could be the first six months," the source said.
