"The key to our success was developing technology that reinforces our business model."
This is a valuable insight that Mary Kay offers. Many businesses are tempted to use and adopt technology for the sake of having technology, rather than think through what it is a business really needs.
More importantly, her focus on the business model of Mary Kay Cosmetics in connection to technology was brilliant. It's surprising how many business leaders today will adopt technology irrelevant of purpose and their business model.
That's what's so powerful about maintaining who we are and what we represent as a business. Everything flows in place, and decisions aren't that difficult to understand or make when we stay focused on the prize.
When we take our eyes off of it, it's there where an endless array of negative surprises can encompass us. And answers will continue to elude us as long as we don't ferociously stay focused on our purpose and business model, in reference to any decision we make.
Technology is a tool that is to serve us and our businesses, not a toy to play with simply because it's there.
Like Mary Kay, success will come from developing and embracing technology that makes sense to our company, not from getting something because another business has done it.
We must maintain the discipline of making decisions wholly on our purpose and business model, and nothing else - no matter what it is set before us.
